This is a traditional pre-1940’s recipe for sweet milk doughnuts, just like grandma used to make them.
Weight Watchers Traditional Sweet Milk Donuts recipe
Ingredients
3-4 cups flour
2 tablespoons fat
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Preparation
1. Cream the fat, adding the milk, sugar and well beaten eggs.
2. Add 3 cups of flour mixed and sifted with the dry ingredients, then more flour to make the dough just stiff enough to roll.
3. Using a knife, toss about 1/3 of the dough on a lightly floured board and knead slightly to make smooth.
4. Roll to a thickness of about 1/2 inch.
5. Freely use a floured spatula to prevent the dough from sticking to the board.
6. Cut with a floured doughnut cutter.
7. Fry in deep fat for about 2 minutes (the donuts should come quickly to the top).
8. Brown on one side then brown on the other side, turning but once.
9. Drain over the fat using absorbent paper.
10. Wait until partly cooled, then sprinkle with powdered sugar.
